The Investors in Education Standard has been established to not only encourage businesses to pro-actively support young people with their learning but also to ensure that support meets a quality standard.

The principles of the Investors in Education standard are as follows:

1. Fit for purpose

Investors in Education propose member businesses would under go a more sector relevant H&S check to a higher standard than currently exists to achieve a health and safety passport. This would then negate the need for multiple H&S checks and would cover the business for a longer period and for any interaction with young people. The standard for the health and safety passport would be set by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Rotherham Chamber of Commerce and other participating stakeholders.

Investors in Education Health and Safety Passport will follow a set of management principles that will establish the standard for businesses, learners, schools, assessors, and work based learning providers.

2. Programme of work

Member businesses will ensure that when young people spend time within their business they will receive a programme of work, which will not only create a purposeful experience for that young person but also ease the burden on members of staff. Investors in Education will advise on this programme of work to help members create meaningful, practical learning experiences.

The key objectives are:

  • To offer young people a purposeful and relevant experience during their time within a business
  • Provide a structure for staff to involve young people in a positive way which doesn’t impinge greatly on the demands of their working day
  • To provide a managed structure, this allows the business to invest its time and knowledge in a way which has a positive impact on both young people and your business
  • Investors in Education will offer advice around introducing young people into the business, task based activities, work shadowing and covering the functional skills that will help structure a more effective practical learning opportunity.

3. Participation

An Investors in Education member must show regular participation with young people offering practical learning experiences, mentoring or providing general support for schools and colleges. Member businesses will receive advice from Investors in Education to signpost them to the most relevant interaction for their business.

All member interactions will be registered to showcase the support local business is giving to its community.
